We’re planning to build a fence to keep animals out of our property, and we’re thinking of using a solar electric fence so we can save some money on electricity to run it. I’m wondering whether solar power will provide enough juice to keep it running all the time, or do we need to have some sort of backup power supply for it as well? We get a fair bit of sun, but it can be dull and rainy for several days at a time in the winter months. Will the fence still charge even if the sun isn’t out?
They work great as long as you get enough sunlight to keep them charged up, all year long. If you don’t, you might need to have some kind of backup power source for it to use when there’s not enough solar energy getting to it.
I live in southern California, and our solar fence works great. We get enough sun all year long that I’ve never had any issues with running out of juice. It might be a different story if you live somewhere that doesn’t get so much sun.
