Posted by Keitha,
We’re replacing some older toilets in our house and we’re considering switching to American Standard toilets instead of the Crane units we’ve had for years. I’ve known a couple of people who have had problems with “exploding Cranes” where they spring a leak out of the blue. I don’t know if this is still an issue (this was a few years back) but I’d rather be safe than sorry. Can someone who has used American Standard fixtures comment on how good they are? I’ve heard good things but I don’t know anyone who has firsthand experience with them, and I’d like to hear what someone who owns them has to say.
Whatever brand you choose, make sure you get a good warranty, one that covers water damage from leaks if possible. We had one of those Crane toilets that sprung a leak, and it was a major pain in the butt to get all the damage fixed.
When we renovated, we went with American Standard fixtures – toilets, sink, etc. – and they’ve all been just fine. Bathroom fixtures aren’t something I really expect to have problems with, but I suppose it can happen.
The brand of toilet isn’t something I notice a lot, but I do have to say I seem to see them in public restrooms a lot. I imagine that’s a sign that they’re pretty reliable, since they obviously get a lot of use in those places.
I don’t even know what kind of fixtures we have in our bathrooms. In fact, I just went and looked out of curiosity, and we have Crane toilets. They’re a little over ten years old, and no explosions here
A friend of mine works in the plumbing industry and I remember him telling me about the whole Crane problem a few years back. When we renovated our bathroom, I went with American Standard for just that reason, and I’m happy with them.
I’m not sure “happy” is the right word – I don’t really think too much about the toilets to be honest – but we haven’t had any trouble at all with our American Standard fixtures. They’ve been reliable for almost 10 years now, so I guess that’s a good thing.
