When I was a teenager, we had a young couple move in across the street from our house. They had a baby and often asked me to babysit for them. I loved the little boy so I never minded watching him. I clearly remember one New Year’s Eve when they went out to a party. I was babysitting and had put the baby down for the night. I grabbed his baby monitor and headed down to the basement to watch a movie. That’s where they had their TV and VCR set up. When I got to the bottom of the steps and turned the corner, I saw the basement floor was covered in water. I panicked and called my neighbors. They came home to find out their sump pump had failed. Thankfully it was nothing I had done. I still remember that horrible night twenty years later.
