An indoor rowing machine are a must have for any fitness enthusiast or if you are looking to burn some fat.  The reason being is that rowing is an aerobic intensive exercise that gets the heart, lungs and muscles working.  The optimal distance for rowing is 2 km which  is short but intensive and is completed in uder 6 minutes by the elite rowers.  However, anything under 7 minutes when rowing this distance is a very good standard of fitness.  To improve your 2 km times, interval training with 10 x 500 metre efforts is very effective. If you are a beginner then 2 mins per 500 metres is a good time to start with.
